The Monach Islands are a small, uninhabited archipelago in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland, located off the west coast of North Uist. The group is known for low, sandy islands with extensive dune systems and an exposed Atlantic environment.

The islands are notable for their wide beaches and active dune systems rather than built attractions. Large populations of grey seals haul out on the shores and the isles provide habitat for seabirds, making them a destination for wildlife watching and coastal photography.

The archipelago’s English name reflects a medieval monastic association recorded in historical sources; settlements were abandoned over time and the islands have been uninhabited for many decades. Natural processes including shifting sands and storms have strongly shaped the islands’ landscape.

They sit off the western coast of North Uist within the Outer Hebrides, exposed to the Atlantic and subject to strong tides and weather. Access is by private boat from the Uists and trips require careful local knowledge of tides and landing conditions.

  • Wildlife: Supports large colonies of grey seals and a range of seabirds; best observed from boats or shore at safe distance during late spring and summer.
