Molokini is a small, crescent-shaped volcanic islet and partially submerged crater off the southwest coast of Maui, Hawaii. It is known primarily as a marine recreation site and ecological reserve.

The sheltered inner crescent forms a shallow reef within the crater that is used for snorkeling and scuba; boats typically anchor on the outer rim while divers enter from the sheltered inner bay. Tour operators run frequent half-day and full-day trips; the islet lies about 2.5 miles (4 km) from the nearest shore of Maui.

Molokini is the remnant of a tuff cone formed by volcanic activity related to the Haleakalā volcanic system. The surrounding reef supports diverse reef fish, corals and other marine life, and the site is managed to limit visitor impact.

The islet sits in the channel between Maui and the island of Kahoʻolawe, administratively part of Maui County and visible from the southern Maui coastline near Makena.

  • Access: Located roughly 2.5 miles (4 km) off the southern shore of Maui, reached by day-boat trips from Kihei, Maalaea and Wailea.
  • Size and shape: The islet is a crescent-shaped, partially submerged volcanic crater covering about 23 acres (9.3 hectares).
  • Why go: Designated as a protected marine area, popular for snorkeling and scuba diving because of its steep walls and clear water; visibility commonly exceeds 30 metres on good days.
