Main image

Moldoveanu Peak is the highest mountain in Romania, rising to 2,544 metres above sea level. It stands in the Făgăraș Mountains, part of the Southern Carpathians.

Routes to the summit follow marked alpine trails and ridgelines and cross exposed high-mountain terrain; typical climbs involve several hours to a full-day ascent from the nearest huts or trailheads. The peak provides wide panoramic views over the Făgăraș massif and neighbouring ranges.

The Făgăraș group and Moldoveanu developed as part of the Carpathian orogeny; the area has long been used for grazing and later for mountaineering and hiking. Modern mapping and mountain huts established in the 20th century support recreational access.

Moldoveanu lies in Brașov County within the Southern Carpathians; the summit is in a high, glaciated alpine zone approximately 80-120 kilometres west of the city of Brașov, surrounded by steep ridges and alpine meadows.

  • Elevation: The summit reaches 2,544 metres and is the highest point in Romania.
  • Ascent notes: Common ascent routes use marked mountain trails through alpine terrain and typically start from mountain huts in the Făgăraș range; conditions are alpine and can change rapidly.

How to Get to Moldoveanu Peak #

Moldoveanu Peak sits in the Făgăraș Mountains (Brașov County) and must be reached on foot. The usual approach is to drive into the Făgăraș range (the Transfăgărășan/DN7C provides vehicle access to the Bâlea Lake area) and then continue to established mountain trailheads and alpine huts (for example the Podragu/Bâlea areas). From any trailhead the final ascent is a multi-hour, marked mountain hike over steep terrain; proper mountain equipment and planning are required.

Tips for Visiting Moldoveanu Peak #

  • Aim for mid-summer (July-September) when alpine snow is least likely; outside this window persistent snow and ice make routes significantly harder and require mountaineering gear.
  • Start very early (pre-dawn) from your chosen trailhead to maximize daylight and avoid the common afternoon thunderstorms that build in the Făgăraș range.
  • Be prepared for route-finding on exposed ridges-carry a detailed map/GPS and a compass, and plan a conservative turnaround time rather than relying on vague summit-time estimates.

Best Time to Visit Moldoveanu Peak #

Late June through September is the best time to visit Moldoveanu Peak for hiking when trails are most likely free of snow and mountain huts are operating.

Summer (best for hiking)
June-September · approx. 0°C to 15°C at the summit
Snow is largely melted on routes and mountain huts/paths are most accessible; stable weather windows are more common but storms can still occur.
Spring / Autumn (variable)
April-May / October-November · approx. -5°C to 10°C at the summit
Conditions can change quickly with snow possible at higher elevations; some routes may still be snow-covered and require experience and equipment.
Winter (for experienced mountaineers only)
December-March · approx. -15°C to 0°C at the summit
Heavy snow, ice and avalanche risk make ascent technical - only attempt with proper winter mountaineering skills and gear.
