How to Get to Mokpo
Mokpo is reachable by rail (KTX terminus at Mokpo Station) and by nearby airports - mainly Muan International Airport and, for more connections, Gwangju Airport. Regular express buses also link Mokpo with Gwangju and Seoul; the city is compact once you arrive, so onward travel is straightforward.
Muan International Airport (MWX): Muan is the closest airport serving Mokpo with domestic and some international flights. From Muan there is an airport limousine bus and local shuttle services to Mokpo (Mokpo Station / Mokpo Intercity Bus Terminal); travel time is roughly 40-50 minutes and fares are approximately 6,000-8,000 KRW. A taxi to central Mokpo takes about 35-50 minutes and costs roughly 40,000-70,000 KRW depending on traffic.
Gwangju Airport (KWJ) / Gwangju Bus Terminal: Gwangju Airport is another option, especially for more frequent domestic connections. From Gwangju you can take express or intercity buses (departing from Gwangju U-Square / Gwangju Bus Terminal) to Mokpo - journeys take about 60-90 minutes with fares roughly 8,000-12,000 KRW; a taxi will be longer and considerably more expensive (approx. 60,000-100,000 KRW).
Train: Mokpo Station (목포역) is the western terminus of the Honam Line and is served by KTX and regional trains. KTX from Seoul (Seoul/Yongsan) to Mokpo takes roughly 2.5-3 hours; adult fares are approximately 52,000-60,000 KRW (one-way, standard class). Local Mugunghwa/ITX services also connect Mokpo with nearby cities on slower schedules and lower fares.
Bus: Long‑distance express buses serve Mokpo at the Mokpo Intercity Bus Terminal (목포종합버스터미널). From Seoul the express bus ride is about 4-5 hours with fares commonly in the 25,000-35,000 KRW range; regional services from Gwangju take about 1-1.5 hours and cost around 8,000-12,000 KRW. City and intercity buses are frequent and link the bus terminal with the port, train station and downtown.
How to Get Around Mokpo
Mokpo is small and easy to navigate: KTX and express buses get you there from major cities, and once in town the combination of city buses, taxis and ferries covers nearly all destinations. For most visitors, a mix of walking for central sights and taxis or buses for longer hops works best.
- Train (KTX at Mokpo Station) (≈52,000-60,000 KRW) - Mokpo Station is the Honam Line terminus and the fastest rail option to/from Seoul and Iksan. KTX services are comfortable and reduce travel time significantly compared with buses; book in advance during holidays. Regional ITX/Mugunghwa trains serve nearby towns but are slower - useful for short hops if you have time.
- Express & Intercity Bus (≈8,000-35,000 KRW) - The Mokpo Intercity Bus Terminal handles long‑distance buses from Seoul, Gwangju and other Jeolla cities. Buses are frequent, reasonably comfortable, and often cheaper than KTX; they can be a good choice outside peak travel times. Buy tickets at the terminal or via intercity bus apps/websites and arrive a bit early in high season.
- City Bus (≈1,200-1,500 KRW) - Mokpo's city buses reach most neighbourhoods, the ferry terminals and key attractions; routes are signposted in Korean and often have Hangeul-only displays. Pay with a T‑money card for the easiest fares and transfers. Buses are the most economical way to get around, though schedules thin out late at night.
- Taxi (≈3,300-15,000 KRW) - Taxis are plentiful, inexpensive for short trips and convenient for luggage or off‑route destinations. Metered flag‑down fares start around the standard city base (roughly 3,300 KRW) and rise with distance; drivers may have limited English, so show your destination in Korean if possible. Taxis are especially handy for early/late connections when buses are not running.
- Ferry (to nearby islands) (≈4,000-20,000 KRW) - Mokpo Port is the gateway to several islands (e.g., Heuksando, Hongdo) with multiple daily ferries in season - schedules change by season so check in advance. Ferries vary from fast passenger boats to slower car ferries; bring cash and buy return tickets early on busy summer weekends. Taking a ferry is the best way to reach island hiking and coastal scenery.
- Walking - Downtown Mokpo is compact and very walkable - many attractions, the waterfront promenade and markets are within easy walking distance. Walking is the best way to soak up the port city atmosphere and discover small eateries and shops. Wear comfortable shoes for cobbled streets near the harbour and Yudal Mountain paths.
