Mohenjo-daro
Archaeological Site Ancient Indus Valley city ruins, major archaeological site
On the Indus floodplain in Sindh, Mohenjo-daro preserves urban ruins of the Bronze Age Indus Valley Civilization, including planned streets, the Great Bath and brick architecture; archaeologists and tourists visit the excavations and museum displays.
Mohenjo‑daro is an archaeological city in Sindh province associated with the Indus (Harappan) civilization and dates to roughly the mid‑3rd to late‑2nd millennium BCE. It is one of the largest and best‑known urban sites of that civilization and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Key visible features include the so‑called Great Bath, a raised citadel area and a planned lower town laid out on a rectilinear grid with covered drains and standardized bricks. The urban layout and public works demonstrate long‑range town planning and sophisticated water management for the period.
Archaeological work at Mohenjo‑daro began in the early 20th century under British‑era excavators; the site has been studied and conserved intermittently since then. It was recognized internationally for its importance and placed under heritage protection in the 20th century.
The ruins sit on the Indus floodplain in the Larkana District of Sindh province, Pakistan, and are presented to visitors via protected walkways and an on‑site interpretation area.
- Great Bath dimensions: The Great Bath measures roughly 12 by 7 metres and is the site's most visited monument, illustrating advanced Harappan urban planning.
- Conservation status: The site is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and conservation work is ongoing to stabilize exposed mudbrick structures.
What to See #
- Great Bath: A sunken brick structure interpreted as a public bathing tank with watertight plastering and steps leading down to the floor.
- Citadel and administrative area: The raised citadel area contains remains of administrative and monumental buildings and overlooks a larger lower‑town grid of streets and houses.
- Lower town and drainage system: The lower town preserves a rectilinear street grid with residential compounds, lanes and an extensive covered drainage system.
