Main image

Moffen is a very small, low-lying islet in the Svalbard archipelago, located just above 80° north latitude. It is notable as a natural haul-out and breeding area for Arctic marine mammals and seabirds.

Seen almost exclusively from boats, the islet is visited for wildlife observation - particularly walrus haul-outs and seabird concentrations - rather than for onshore activities. There are no facilities and no safe landing sites for visitors; observation is normally from vessels a distance away.

The islet has never supported a permanent population and has functioned primarily as wildlife habitat. It is administered under Norwegian Svalbard regulations and has been managed to limit human disturbance to the animals that use it.

Geographically it sits off the northern coast of Spitsbergen in the Svalbard archipelago, in Arctic waters north of mainland Norway. The nearest settlement of note is Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen; visits are typically part of expedition cruises operating in northern Svalbard.

  • Wildlife protection: Strict regulations prohibit landing and close approaches to protect hauled-out walruses and breeding seabirds; vessels should maintain distance.
