Møns Klint
Cliff Dramatic white chalk cliffs along Møn's coastline
White chalk cliffs on Denmark’s island Møn with steep paths, a staircase to the pebble beach and a natural history centre. Visitors hike cliff tops, search for fossils and watch spring bird migration.
Møns Klint is a dramatic line of chalk cliffs on the eastern coast of the island of Møn in southeastern Denmark, formed by Cretaceous chalk and exposed along the shoreline. The cliffs reach heights of about 128 metres and form a steep white escarpment above the Baltic Sea.
The site offers a network of cliff-top walking routes, marked viewpoints and stair access to shingle beaches where Cretaceous fossils can be found. The GeoCenter at Møns Klint provides exhibitions and educational displays about the geology, fossils and natural history of the cliffs.
The cliffs formed over millions of years through marine deposition and subsequent erosion, and they are notable for their exposed chalk layers and fossil-bearing strata. Conservation and visitor interpretation aim to balance access with protection of the fragile cliff environment.
Møns Klint lies on the eastern shore of Møn, within Zealand county, and is reached by road from the main ferry and road links to the island; it is a distinctive natural attraction in southern Denmark.
- Cliff height: The cliffs rise to about 128 metres above sea level at their highest points and stretch along several kilometres of Møn's eastern shoreline.
- Fossils and safety: Fossil hunting is a common activity on the shingle beaches below the cliffs; visitors should follow local safety guidance and tide information when accessing the beach.
What to See #
- GeoCenter: The GeoCenter Møns Klint visitor centre interprets the geology, fossils and natural history of the cliffs and provides trail access, exhibitions and a viewpoint café.
- Trails and viewpoints: A network of cliff-top paths and stairways leads to beach access points and viewpoints along the stretch of chalk cliffs, with several marked trails of varying length.
How to Get to Møns Klint #
Møns Klint is on the island of Møn and is most easily reached by car from Copenhagen: expect roughly 1.5-2 hours driving (around 120-140 km) via the motorways (E47/E55) and then local roads onto Møn; follow signs for Møns Klint and the visitor centre where parking is available.
Public transport options require a combination of train to a nearby hub (for example Vordingborg) and then a regional bus or taxi for the final leg; check current local bus timetables for connections.
Tips for Visiting Møns Klint #
- Park at (or start at) the GeoCenter Møns Klint visitor center to use marked trails and get local information-this is the usual access point for the main cliff viewpoints and beach stairs.
- Visit at sunrise or early morning for dramatic light on the white chalk cliffs and to avoid midday coach groups; the coastal paths offer quieter vantage points than the busiest lookout.
- Be prepared for long, steep stair descents to the beach from the main viewpoints and allow extra time to climb back up-many visitors underestimate how long the return takes.
Best Time to Visit Møns Klint #
