Mjøsa is a glacially formed lake shaped during the last ice age and has long been an important transport and settlement corridor in inland Norway. Over time the shores have become dotted with towns, transport links and recreational facilities.
Geographically the lake lies roughly north of Oslo in southeastern Norway, with major towns on its shores; Lillehammer sits near the northern end and Hamar near the eastern shore.

How to Get to Mjøsa #
Mjøsa is easiest reached by road or rail from Oslo. By car take the E6 north (the highway runs along the eastern shore) - Oslo is about 120 km from Hamar on Mjøsa’s southeastern shore and about 180 km from Lillehammer at the lake’s northern end; both towns have plenty of parking and lakeside access.
By train take the Dovre Line (operated by Vy) from Oslo to Hamar or Lillehammer; both stations are in town centres and within roughly a 5-15 minute (up to ~1 km) walk of the lakeshore.
Tips for Visiting Mjøsa #
- Visit Mjøsa at sunrise or late evening in summer for calm water and the best mirror-like reflections-photographers and local anglers head out early, so mornings are quieter.
- Use the towns along the lake as access points rather than trying to 'visit Mjøsa' from a single spot: Hamar, Lillehammer and Gjøvik each give different shoreline views and facilities; choose the town that matches the activity you want (museums in Hamar, Olympic legacy in Lillehammer).
- To avoid the busiest waterfront promenades, drive or cycle to smaller lakeside villages (for example stretches north of Gjøvik or east of Hamar) where you'll find more open shoreline and fewer day-trippers.
Best Time to Visit Mjøsa #
Best visited in summer (June-August) for the warmest weather and lake activities, with shoulder seasons offering fewer crowds and pleasant conditions.
