Miyako Islands
Islands Subtropical Okinawan islands with extensive coral reefs
A group of subtropical islands in Okinawa Prefecture, the Miyako Islands offer white-sand beaches, coral reefs and local Ryukyuan culture. Visitors snorkel, dive and island-hop between Miyako-jima, Ikema and surrounding islets.
The Miyako Islands are a subgroup of the Ryukyu (Okinawa) archipelago in southern Japan, part of Okinawa Prefecture. The cluster comprises several inhabited and uninhabited islands with a subtropical climate and extensive coral reef systems.
The group is popular for sandy beaches, reef diving and snorkeling, and island-style tourism. Several islands are connected by bridges, enabling easy road travel between main population centres and beaches.
Historically the islands were part of the Ryukyu Kingdom and retain distinct local culture, dialects and traditions within Okinawa Prefecture. Modern transport links include ferry and air services to other parts of Okinawa and mainland Japan.
The Miyako Islands lie southwest of mainland Japan as part of Okinawa Prefecture and are accessed by air or sea from other Ryukyu islands.
- Key link: Irabu Bridge links Miyakojima with Irabu (a multi-kilometre sea-crossing bridge that opened in the 2010s), improving road access between islands.
What to See #
- Miyakojima: Miyakojima is the largest and most populated island in the group, serving as the transport and service hub with the main airport and port.
- Irabu and Ikema: Irabu and Ikema are connected to Miyakojima by bridges, creating easy road links between islands and enabling day trips between beaches and villages.
- Tarama and outer islets: Tarama and smaller outer islets offer quieter beaches and traditional island villages, with less development than Miyakojima town areas.
How to Get to Miyako Islands #
The Miyako Islands (Miyako‑jima and neighbouring islets) are serviced by regular domestic flights from Naha (Okinawa) to Miyako Airport; there are also ferry connections from the main Okinawa island on some services. On arrival at Miyako Airport a rental car or taxi is the most practical way to reach beaches, towns and inter‑island bridges.
Inter‑island ferries and bridges link several nearby islands, but having a car on Miyako‑jima makes exploration much easier.
Tips for Visiting Miyako Islands #
- Plan to arrive early at popular beaches such as Yonaha Maehama (Maehama Beach) for sunrise and far fewer people; the light and calm sea in the morning are best for photographs and snorkeling.
- Rent a car on Miyako‑jima-public transport is limited and the island's attractions (bridges, beaches, inland viewpoints) are spread out, so a vehicle makes efficient day trips possible.
- Book any reef or island boat trips through established local operators in advance-tours to places like Yabiji (seasonal reef areas) and snorkeling sites run on schedules and sell out during peak season.
Best Time to Visit Miyako Islands #
Aim for March-May for the most comfortable weather and lower typhoon risk on the Miyako Islands.
