Miyako Island
Island Subtropical island in Okinawa with coral reefs
Miyako‑jima in Okinawa Prefecture features white‑sand beaches, coral reefs and subtropical weather. Travelers come for diving, cycling coastal roads and local Ryukyuan food in small port towns.
Miyako Island (part of Miyakojima city) is a coral island in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, known for white-sand beaches, clear seas and coral reef ecosystems. It forms part of the Miyako Islands group and is a popular destination for beach tourism and scuba diving.
Beaches such as Yonaha Maehama are major draws thanks to long stretches of sand and shallow, clear water. Visitors also use the island as a base for snorkeling, diving and boat trips to nearby reefs and smaller islands.
Historically the island is part of the Ryukyu island chain and developed local fishing and trade traditions; modern tourism infrastructure expanded in the 20th and 21st centuries, including improved air links and the construction of the Irabu Bridge in 2015 which connected Miyako to Irabu Island by road.
Miyako Island lies in the southern Ryukyu archipelago, administered as part of Okinawa Prefecture. The island is served by Miyako Airport and is reached by air or by sea from other Okinawan islands and the Japanese mainland.
- Irabu Bridge length: The Irabu Bridge provides a direct road link to Irabu Island and is about 3.54 kilometres long, improving access across shallow reef waters.
- Main activities: The island is renowned for coral reef diving, snorkeling and beaches; marine recreation and resort tourism are the primary visitor activities.
What to See #
- Yonaha Maehama Beach: A white-sand bay on the island's western side famed for long sandy beach and clear waters popular with swimmers and sunbathers.
- Irabu Bridge: A 3.54-kilometre bridge completed in 2015 that links Miyako Island with nearby Irabu Island, forming a key road connection for vehicles.
- Miyako Airport: The main airport serving the island with regular flights to Okinawa's main island and other regional destinations, providing the primary air access point.
How to Get to Miyako Island #
By air: Miyako Island (Miyako‑jima) is served by Miyako Airport (MMY) with frequent flights from Naha (Okinawa mainland) and some domestic routes.
On the island: From Miyako Airport it’s a roughly 15-20 minute taxi or rental‑car drive into the main Hirara area; rental cars and taxis are the most common way to get around the island to beaches and sights.
Tips for Visiting Miyako Island #
- Plan island time for late spring through early autumn for calm seas and snorkeling; avoid the peak typhoon season (typically late summer) when services and ferries may be disrupted.
- Fly to Miyako Airport or take the ferry from Okinawa main islands, and arrange a rental car on arrival - public transport on Miyako-jima is limited and a car lets you reach the best beaches and viewpoints.
- Visit Yonaha Maehama and Sunayama early in the morning to enjoy sand and clear water with far fewer people; use Kurima Bridge to reach Kurima-jima viewpoint for sweeping views back to Miyako.
- If you want quieter beaches, aim for weekdays or early/late in the day; popular stretches get crowded mid-afternoon and on holiday weekends.
Best Time to Visit Miyako Island #
Aim for spring (March-May) or early autumn for warm, pleasant weather while avoiding peak typhoon risk.
