Missolonghi–Aitoliko Lagoons
National Park Large coastal lagoons important for birdlife and fisheries
A network of coastal lagoons and wetlands west of the Gulf of Patras known for birdlife, fishing villages and reedbeds; tourists take boat tours, birdwatch and photograph channels.
The Missolonghi-Aitoliko lagoons are a network of coastal lagoons and brackish waters on the western Greek coast near the towns of Missolonghi and Aitoliko. They form an extensive wetland system important for fisheries and for migratory and resident waterbirds.
The complex includes shallow lagoons, channels, and reed beds that support commercial fishing, aquaculture, and salt production in parts of the area. The lagoons are also valued for birdwatching and biodiversity.
These waterways have been used for local livelihoods for centuries and are associated with the towns of Missolonghi and Aitoliko, the latter of which is built on an island within the lagoon and is connected to the mainland by bridges.
The lagoons lie on the Ionian coast of Western Greece, immediately adjacent to the towns of Missolonghi and Aitoliko and visible from roads and settlements in the surrounding lowland plain.
