The site today contains the historic mission church, restored mission buildings, gardens and a museum that interprets the mission era and local Indigenous history. It functions both as an active parish and as a historic site with visitor facilities.
The mission was founded by Franciscan missionaries as part of Spain’s colonial program; it later underwent secularization under Mexican rule in the 19th century and subsequent periods of decline and restoration. The present complex reflects multiple phases of rebuilding and preservation.
