A rugged, largely treeless summit typical of high-Arctic terrain, used as a visual reference for vessels and scientific parties visiting the island. The mountain and its slopes are notable for their stark, exposed rock and tundra vegetation.
The feature was mapped and recorded by polar and shipping charts as Bear Island was surveyed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; it has been referenced as the island’s principal peak in maritime navigation and scientific literature.
Standing at the center of Bear Island in the Barents Sea, Miseryfjellet is administratively part of Svalbard, Norway, roughly midway between mainland Norway and the main Svalbard islands.
