Main image

Mingun Pahtodawgyi is an enormous unfinished stupa on the west bank of the Irrawaddy River at Mingun, near Mandalay in Myanmar. Construction was initiated in 1790 and the structure remains incomplete, notable for its exposed massive brick core.

The site is commonly visited together with nearby monuments including a very large bell and a white terraced pagoda; the bell is among the largest ringing bells still extant. The unfinished stupa presents an imposing brick mass several storeys high that visitors can walk around and view from close range.

Work was started by King Bodawpaya and never brought to completion; the structure suffered major damage in an 1839 earthquake which contributed to its unfinished state. Over the 19th and 20th centuries it has remained a prominent historical and cultural landmark despite never being finished.

Mingun sits on the Irrawaddy River opposite Mandalay, about 10 to 11 kilometres upstream from central Mandalay by river transport. The site is reached by boat from Mandalay or by road access to the small town of Mingun.

  • Construction: Construction began in 1790 under King Bodawpaya and the project was never completed, leaving an enormous brick core visible today.
  • Earthquake damage: A major earthquake in 1839 caused significant structural damage and contributed to the abandonment of the project.
