Mingulay
Island Uninhabited Hebridean island noted for seabird colonies
Remote Outer Hebrides island with steep sea cliffs, abandoned crofting ruins and important seabird colonies; visited by boat for wildlife watching, coastal walks and island archaeology.
Mingulay is an uninhabited island in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides known for its exposed sea cliffs, coastal stacks and large seabird colonies. It was occupied for centuries and abandoned in the early 20th century.
The island offers coastal walks to dramatic cliff edges and viewpoints over sea stacks where seabirds nest in large numbers. Remains of former crofting settlements and fields are visible inland, giving a sense of past habitation.
Mingulay was a permanently inhabited crofting community until the early 20th century, when the island’s last residents left; the ruins of homes and field enclosures remain. Since then it has been managed as a largely uninhabited wildlife and cultural landscape.
Located in the southern part of the Outer Hebrides, Mingulay sits off the coast of Barra and is reached only by sea from nearby inhabited islands. Weather and tides determine access.
- Access and landing conditions: Landing by private boat or organized wildlife trips is weather dependent; landings can be difficult and are often restricted outside the breeding season.
- Birdwatching season: Best birdwatching occurs during the seabird breeding season, typically late spring to mid-summer.
What to See #
- Village ruins: Scattered village ruins and field terraces remain from the island's former settlement periods, showing domestic building outlines and small enclosures used for crofting.
- Cliffs and seabird colonies: Steep sea cliffs, stacks and rocky shorelines that support large breeding colonies of seabirds including puffins, razorbills and guillemots; many viewpoints are reached only by foot or boat.
How to Get to Mingulay #
Access is by private charter from Barra, Mingulay Boat Trips (when operating) or other local operators. Crossing times depend on sea conditions; the trip from Barra/Eriskay is typically a few hours including transfer windows. Landings are weather-dependent.
