Mingachevir Reservoir is the largest reservoir in Azerbaijan, formed by damming the Kura River to create a major water and energy resource in the country’s interior.
The dam and reservoir were constructed in the Soviet era during the mid-20th century as part of large-scale hydraulic and agricultural development projects to supply irrigation and generate electricity. Since then the reservoir has remained a key element of regional water management and energy infrastructure.
The reservoir lies on the Kura River in central Azerbaijan near the city of Mingachevir, occupying a broad basin within the country’s interior.
