Minaret of Jam
Archaeological Site 13th-century UNESCO-listed brick minaret standing in remote Ghor
The 12th‑century Minaret of Jam in Ghor Province is a brick tower with intricate Kufic inscriptions and geometric ornament; its remoteness and UNESCO status attract specialists and adventurous visitors.
The Minaret of Jam is a freestanding 12th-century brick tower in a remote valley of Ghor Province, Afghanistan, notable for its height and detailed brickwork. Erected during the Ghurid dynasty, the tower stands on the bank of a small river amid rugged terrain and is an outstanding example of medieval Islamic architecture in the region.
The minaret rises to about 60 to 65 metres and is faced with elaborate geometric patterns, Kufic inscriptions and glazed tile bands. Its slender, cylindrical form and surviving decorative bands are principal reasons for international recognition and conservation concern.
The tower was built in the late 12th century as part of the cultural and political expansion of the Ghurid state and is often associated with the nearby, now-ruined Ghurid capital. It has survived earthquakes, erosion and centuries of isolation but faces ongoing risks from flood and groundwater erosion.
The Minaret of Jam is located in a remote, narrow valley of western-central Afghanistan in Ghor Province; access requires off-road travel from regional towns and the site is distant from major urban centres.
- Date and decoration: Constructed in the 12th century by the Ghurid dynasty, the minaret is famous for its intricate brick and stucco decoration including Kufic and geometric motifs.
