Minaret and Archaeological Remains of Jam
Historical Site UNESCO site featuring 12th-century brick minaret
12th-century brick minaret at Jam in Ghor Province, set beside archaeological remains of the Ghurid period and noted for intricate brickwork and Kufic inscriptions. Scholars visit for medieval Islamic architecture; access can be limited by remoteness and security.
The Minaret and Archaeological Remains of Jam is a 12th-century brick minaret and associated medieval archaeological site in Ghor Province, Afghanistan, dating to around 1190 and standing roughly 65 metres tall. It is one of the most complete surviving monuments of Ghurid architecture.
The site is dominated by the tall cylindrical tower with richly worked brick patterns, glazed tile panels and inscription bands. The minaret sits amid scattered archaeological remains of a medieval settlement and terraced fields carved into steep slopes, giving a clear vertical emphasis to the monument and its setting.
The minaret was built during the Ghurid dynasty around the late 12th century and served as a monumental and religious tower. Over subsequent centuries the surrounding town was abandoned and the monument has remained vulnerable to natural erosion, floods and earthquakes.
The site lies in a remote, steep river valley in Ghor Province, Afghanistan, set among rugged hills and river terraces. It is far from major urban centres and reached by difficult roads and tracks, which contributes to its isolation and conservation challenges.
- Height and decoration: about 65 metres tall and decorated with glazed tiles and banded brick inscriptions in Kufic script
- Access and preservation: located in a remote, steep river valley and exposed to erosion and flood risk; access is difficult and often seasonal
