Minami-za is a historic kabuki theatre in Kyoto, located on the Shijo Avenue area of the city’s central district. It is one of Kyoto’s best-known traditional kabuki venues and continues to host regular kabuki performances.
Inside the theatre visitors find a traditional kabuki stage with an orchestra pit and seating arranged for both raised boxes and standard seats, plus seasonal programs that present classical kabuki plays and star actors. The building’s façade and auditorium retain stylistic elements associated with traditional Japanese theater architecture.
The theatre dates to the early history of kabuki in the city and has been rebuilt and renovated several times while continuing to serve as a major venue for kabuki in Kyoto. It has long been associated with the development and preservation of kabuki repertoire in the Kansai region.
