Museum Sculptor Carl Milles' home museum and sculpture park
On Lidingö’s shoreline, Millesgården presents sculptor Carl Milles’ house and gardens with figurative bronzes, fountains and seaside terraces-appealing to sculpture fans and those who pair the site with Stockholm’s island museums.
Millesgården is a museum and sculpture garden on the island of Lidingö in Stockholm County, built and used by sculptor Carl Milles (1875-1955). It preserves the artist’s house, studios and a large outdoor collection of his sculptures.
The property combines indoor museum displays of sketches, models and personal collections with an extensive outdoor sculpture garden laid out across terraces and fountains. The garden features numerous bronze and stone sculptures sited to take advantage of the estate’s terraces and views over the water, and the house contains exhibition rooms showing the artist’s work and related objects.
Carl Milles developed the estate as his home and studio in the first half of the 20th century and adapted the grounds to display his work publicly; the property was opened to visitors in the 1930s and has since been operated as a museum dedicated to his legacy. The site preserves both finished public commissions and smaller studio works from his career.
Millesgården stands on Lidingö island just northeast of central Stockholm, within Stockholm County, and is reached by road from the city across the island.
