Millennium Park
Park Urban park featuring Cloud Gate and public art
Chicago’s Millennium Park fronts the lake with Cloud Gate (‘The Bean’), Jay Pritzker Pavilion and Crown Fountain. Visitors come for public art, free concerts and easy access to the lakefront and the Art Institute.
Millennium Park is a 24.5-acre public park in downtown Chicago, Illinois, that opened in 2004 as an extension of Grant Park. It combines large-scale public art, performance venues and landscaped gardens and quickly became one of the city’s premier civic attractions.
Major attractions include Anish Kapoor’s reflective sculpture Cloud Gate, Frank Gehry’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion concert shell with seating for fixed audiences plus a lawn for several thousand more, Jaume Plensa’s Crown Fountain, and the planted Lurie Garden. The park hosts free public concerts, art installations and seasonal programming year-round.
Millennium Park is designed for easy pedestrian access from Michigan Avenue and the Loop and is heavily used for photography, events and public gatherings. The park’s design emphasizes sightlines to the skyline and the lakefront while offering free cultural programming.
Construction took place in the late 1990s and early 2000s on former railway and parking lands, creating an elevated public space that links the city’s cultural institutions and provides year-round attractions including an ice rink in winter.
