A Neoclassical palace on St. Petersburg’s Arts Square, Mikhailovsky Palace houses the Russian Museum’s main collection. Tourists visit for Russian painting, ornate interiors and central museum exhibitions.
Mikhailovsky Palace is a neoclassical palace on Arts Square in central Saint Petersburg, Russia, designed by architect Carlo Rossi and built between 1819 and 1825 as the city residence of Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich. It is a prominent example of early 19th-century Russian neoclassical architecture.
The palace houses branch exhibition spaces of the State Russian Museum, displaying collections of Russian art within restored ceremonial rooms and galleries. The exterior faces Arts Square and forms an architectural ensemble with the neighbouring Mikhailovsky Garden and nearby cultural institutions.
Commissioned for Grand Duke Michael Pavlovich, the palace was completed in the early 1820s and later converted to public cultural use in the late 19th century as part of the development of state museum collections. Restoration and adaptation have preserved many of the palace’s interior decorative schemes while accommodating museum displays.
The palace sits on Arts Square in central Saint Petersburg, within walking distance of Nevsky Prospekt and other central cultural landmarks.
