Isla Mujeres is a small Caribbean island municipality off the coast of Cancún in Quintana Roo, known for beaches, snorkeling and a relaxed town center. The island has a compact road network and a mix of resort and local neighbourhoods.

Key visitor areas include Playa Norte on the sheltered northern shore, cliff-top viewpoints and a small pre-Hispanic shrine at Punta Sur, and a commercial marine park on the southern shore for snorkeling and water activities. The island also hosts a turtle conservation nursery and a marina with day-trip services.

The island was used in pre-Hispanic times as a sanctuary to the goddess Ixchel and later received its Spanish name meaning “Island of Women.” Today it is connected to the mainland by regular ferry services and is a short trip from Cancún’s hotel zone.

Isla Mujeres sits a few kilometres off the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula and is typically reached by ferry from Cancún or by private boat.

  • Ferry access: A frequent ferry from Cancún's Puerto Juárez reaches the island in roughly 15-20 minutes, making day trips the most common visit option.
  • Best time and activities: Playa Norte is busiest midday and early afternoon; snorkeling and reef activities are best undertaken on calm days and with local operators.

What to See #

  • Playa Norte: A wide, gently sloping beach on the island's northern shore is one of Mexico's best-known swimming and sunbathing spots, with shallow water and reef-protected conditions.
  • Punta Sur: Punta Sur occupies the island's southern headland and combines cliff-top sculptures, a small Mayan ruin, and coastal viewpoints over the Caribbean.
  • Garrafón / marine park: A marine park and activity area on the island's south coast offers snorkeling, zip-lines and kayaking over coral reefs and rocky shorelines.

How to Get to Isla Mujeres #

Isla Mujeres is reached by ferry from Cancún. The main ferry operator Ultramar runs frequent crossings from Puerto Juárez (just north of downtown Cancún) and another terminal near the Hotel Zone; the crossing takes about 15-25 minutes. From most parts of Cancún it is a short drive (10-30 minutes depending on where you are in the city) to the ferry terminals - taxis, colectivos and hotel shuttles serve the ports.

On arrival the ferry docks in downtown Isla Mujeres (El Centro) and the main town and beaches are a 5-15 minute walk from the pier; golf carts, taxis and bikes are widely available to reach beaches and sights.

Tips for Visiting Isla Mujeres #

  • Take one of the earliest Ultramar ferries from Puerto Juárez or Gran Puerto to arrive before the day‑trippers; mornings are quieter on the island and you'll have better access to Punta Sur and the sculpture park.
  • Head straight to Punta Sur on the island's southern tip for cliff views and the flora/fauna trails-this area fills up midday and is often the most rewarding spot for photos and solitude.
  • Rent a golf cart or scooter as soon as you arrive rather than later in the day; that gives you flexibility to reach lesser‑visited spots (Tortugranja/turtle sanctuary and quieter beaches) before they become crowded.

Best Time to Visit Isla Mujeres #

Isla Mujeres is best visited in the dry season (December-April) for calmer seas and sunnier weather, but avoid peak holiday weeks if you want fewer crowds.

High / dry season
December-April · ~24-31°C
Generally drier seas and pleasant weather-this is the busiest time (holiday travel and spring break), so expect higher prices and more visitors.
Low / wet season
May-November (peak rainfall and hurricane season Jun-Nov) · ~25-33°C
Warmer, more humid conditions with a higher chance of storms and rougher sea conditions; fewer tourists and often lower prices outside major holidays.
