Cozumel

Cozumel is a Caribbean island off the eastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico, known for clear waters, coral reefs and a strong tourism industry. The island is a major cruise-ship port and diving destination.

The island’s western reef systems offer plentiful snorkeling and scuba diving, with numerous named dive sites and clear drop-offs along the fringing reef. Beaches, coastal parks and marine reserves attract day-trippers and overnight tourists, while the town of San Miguel provides shops, restaurants and ferry connections.

Cozumel has a Maya heritage and later became an important waypoint in maritime and tourist routes; in the modern era it developed significant tourism infrastructure focused on reef-based activities and cruise tourism. Conservation efforts have sought to protect reef habitats amid heavy visitor use.

Cozumel lies a short ferry ride east of Playa del Carmen on the mainland, separated by the Cozumel Channel, and sits off the northeastern coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Caribbean Sea.
