Mevlâna Museum
Museum Sufi lodge turned museum honoring poet Rumi's legacy
Konya’s Mevlâna Museum preserves Rumi’s mausoleum, whirling-dervish artifacts and manuscripts; visitors come for Sufi history, to see the tomb, and for seasonal Sema performances.
Mevlana Museum in Konya is the mausoleum and former lodge of the Mevlevi order centered on the 13th-century Sufi poet Jalal ad-Din Rumi, who died in 1273. The complex originated in the 13th century and preserves the tomb and related monastic buildings.
The complex houses the tomb chamber with its green-tiled dome, a preserved sema (whirling) hall, living quarters of the dervishes, and museum galleries showing manuscripts, ritual objects, and Mevlevi robes. Many visitors come to see the tomb and the collection of religious and cultural artifacts associated with the Mevlevi order.
After Rumi’s death the site developed as a Mevlevi tekke (dervish lodge) and became the focal point for the order. Over the centuries the complex was expanded and maintained by successive Ottoman patrons and later became a museum complex preserving the order’s material culture.
The museum sits in central Konya in Konya Province in inland Anatolia. It is a short distance from the city center and is one of Konya’s primary cultural and religious sites.
- Mevlana's tomb: The site contains the tomb of the 13th-century Sufi poet and mystic Jalal ad-Din Rumi, who died in 1273.
- Green dome: The green-tiled dome on the mausoleum is a distinctive landmark in Konya and a common reference point for visitors.
What to See #
- Tomb of Mevlana: Contains the tomb chamber of Jalal ad-Din Rumi with the distinctive green-tiled dome and the original sarcophagi of the Mevlevi family.
- Semahane (Sema Hall): A large ceremonial hall where the Mevlevi order performed the sema; the space is now preserved as part of the museum complex.
- Dervish cells and service rooms: Former living quarters and service rooms of the dervish lodge that display Mevlevi robes, musical instruments, and daily-use objects.
- Museum galleries: Galleries that present manuscripts, calligraphy, and ritual objects associated with the Mevlevi order and the broader Seljuk-Ottoman periods.

Tips for Visiting Mevlâna Museum #
- Arrive early on weekdays to avoid the busiest pilgrim and tour-group periods; mornings are calmer for viewing the mausoleum and its surrounding complex in Konya's old city.
- Start at the outer courtyard and work inward-the museum sections on the lower levels contain manuscripts, instruments and Sufi artefacts many visitors miss when they focus only on the green-turbaned tomb chamber.
- Check scheduled times for the small performance areas or temporary exhibits-special displays about Mevlâna and the Mevlevi order are rotated and worth timing your visit for.
- Allow extra time for the museum displays and the museum shop area that houses historic manuscripts and smaller relics; these quieter rooms provide context that enriches a quick walkthrough of the mausoleum.
Best Time to Visit Mevlâna Museum #
Visit the Mevlana Museum outside the mid-December Şeb-i Arus period-spring or autumn offer pleasant conditions and fewer crowds.
