Metaliferi Mountains

The Metaliferi Mountains are a metalliferous subrange in western-central Romania, forming part of the broader Apuseni and Western Carpathian mountain system. The range has long been associated with metal ore deposits and mining.

Hikers and visitors encounter a folded, forested mountain landscape with historic mining villages and open-pit and underground mine sites in parts of the range. The area is noted for rural settlements, mining heritage, and trails rather than high alpine terrain.

The Metaliferi area has been mined for polymetallic ores for centuries, with mining activity documented since antiquity and intensified in more recent centuries. Some local sites preserve mine galleries and industrial heritage related to ore extraction.

The range lies in central-western Romania within the Transylvania region, extending across parts of the Apuseni foothills and neighbouring counties.
