Meseta de Somuncurá

The Meseta de Somuncurá is a broad volcanic plateau in northern Patagonia, located primarily within Río Negro Province in Argentina, noted for its isolated highland steppe and exceptional levels of endemism. The plateau’s volcanic origin and relative isolation have produced distinctive soils and habitats that support rare and localized plant and animal communities.

The landscape consists of flat-topped mesas, rocky outcrops, steppe grassland and patches of shrubland, with ecological communities adapted to semi-arid conditions. Scientific interest centers on the plateau’s endemic species and its role as an ecological island within the Patagonian region.

Geologically the plateau formed through extensive volcanic flows that left basaltic and plateau-like landforms, and its topography and soils differ markedly from surrounding lowland pampas and valleys. Human use has historically been sparse, with low-density grazing and small settlements at the plateau margins.

The Meseta de Somuncurá sits in northern Patagonia in Argentina’s Río Negro Province, occupying an elevated interior position away from major coastal routes and nearest larger towns; the area is remote and approached via regional roads across semi-arid terrain.
