Merv
Archaeological Site Ancient Silk Road city ruins in Turkmenistan
Merv preserves extensive Silk Road ruins in Mary Province: fortified walls, mausolea and caravanserai foundations from Parthian, Sassanian and Islamic periods. Archaeology-minded travelers explore the sprawling excavations and museum displays.
Merv is an extensive ancient oasis city in the Karakum Desert of present-day Mary Region, Turkmenistan, and one of the major urban centres of Central Asia. It preserves remains from several successive cities spanning pre-Islamic and medieval periods and is recognised for its archaeological importance.
The site contains large ruined enclosures, mosques, mausoleums and fortifications spread across several kilometres, including distinct walled districts and citadels. Key visible areas include large Seljuk-era walls, monumental mausoleums, and the foundations of earlier Parthian and Sasanian settlement phases. Many visitors examine the scale of the ruined enclosures and the surviving Seljuk architecture when touring the site.
Merv developed over many centuries under different empires and rulers. It reached major prominence as an oasis hub on the Silk Road and as a regional capital under Islamic dynasties, then became a principal Seljuk city in the 11th and 12th centuries. The city suffered catastrophic destruction during the Mongol campaigns in the early 13th century, after which it declined and was gradually abandoned.
The ruins lie in the Murghab river oasis near the modern city of Mary in south-central Turkmenistan, set within an arid desert landscape where the river plain supports the archaeological mounds and walls.
- Multiple urban layers: Includes multiple successive walled cities and citadels on a single archaeological site, with visible ruins spanning Parthian, Sasanian and Islamic periods.
- World Heritage status: Recognised for its importance on the Silk Road and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its archaeological value.
What to See #
- Sultan Kala: A large Seljuk-era walled city and administrative centre occupied from the 11th to 13th centuries, known for extensive foundations and street layouts.
- Gyaur Kala: A pre-Islamic citadel with Parthian and Sasanian remains representing an older phase of occupation on the site.
- Erk Kala: The oldest fortified precinct on the site, traditionally treated as the original citadel or inner fortress for successive cities of Merv.
- Tomb of Sultan Sanjar: A 12th-century Seljuk mausoleum marking the tomb of Sultan Sanjar and notable for its scale among medieval Central Asian funerary monuments.
How to Get to Merv #

Local shared taxis and tour operators in Mary commonly include Merv on day-trip itineraries.
Tips for Visiting Merv #
- Visit in the cool morning hours from Mary to avoid midday heat and to see the light fall across the complex's low ruins and mausoleums; the main archaeological area opens from the city side near Mary.
- Hire a local guide in Mary or at the site - the scale of Merv's different walled districts (Erk, Gyaur, Sultan Kala) and surviving irrigation works is easier to appreciate with someone who can explain the layout and significance.
- Allow time to see the small regional museum in Mary (or displays at the site) as many visitors focus on surface ruins and miss artifacts and reconstructed plans that clarify how the oasis city functioned.
Best Time to Visit Merv #
Best in spring or autumn when temperatures are moderate for exploring the archaeological site.
