Merir

Merir is a small coral island that forms part of the Sonsorol State of Palau in the western Pacific. It is a low-lying island with a small land area and no permanent urban infrastructure.

The island offers a natural, undeveloped shoreline and is visited infrequently by local boats; there are no tourist resorts or regular transport services. Activities are limited to landing, observing coastal vegetation and traditional uses by local communities when visits occur.

Merir has been part of the traditional maritime territory of the peoples of Sonsorol and nearby islands. It has seen occasional temporary habitation and use for fishing and resource gathering rather than sustained settlement.

Merir sits in the far southwest of Palau’s island groups within Sonsorol State and is reached only by inter-island boat travel from other southern Palauan islands.
