Merdeka Square, Jakarta

Merdeka Square (Medan Merdeka) is the large central civic square of Jakarta that surrounds the city’s National Monument and forms the political and ceremonial heart of Indonesia’s capital.

The square was developed as part of colonial and post-independence urban planning and has been the site of national celebrations since Indonesian independence; the National Monument was completed in the 1970s as a symbol of independence.

Merdeka Square sits in central Jakarta, immediately north of the presidential palace and within walking distance of other central districts such as Gambir and Menteng.
