Merdeka Palace, locally Istana Merdeka, is one of Indonesia’s presidential palaces located on Merdeka Square in Central Jakarta. It serves as a principal state building for official ceremonies and receptions and is one of a group of presidential palaces in the country.
The palace complex retains much of its formal colonial-era layout and is used for state occasions, receptions and official functions; public entry is restricted outside special events or guided visits. The complex faces the National Monument (Monas) and forms part of Jakarta’s historic administrative core.
Originally constructed during the Dutch colonial era as a governor’s residence, the building became a presidential palace after Indonesian independence and has been adapted for republican state use since then.
The palace sits on the northern side of Merdeka Square in Central Jakarta, close to Gambir railway station and the National Monument.
