Merdø

Merdø is a small island in the archipelago off the coast of southern Norway in Agder. It is known for its preserved wooden coastal settlement and maritime heritage.

Short walking routes link a compact cluster of traditional wooden houses, shoreline paths and small beaches, with a visible historic harbour area where leisure boats land in summer. The island houses a maritime museum that interprets the local coastal trading and fishing history, and visitors commonly spend a few hours exploring on foot.

Merdø developed as a local port and coastal trading place during the age of sail and retained a permanent small settlement of wooden houses connected to maritime trade. Some former trading buildings have been preserved and repurposed as a museum and visitor displays.

It lies in the coastal archipelago near the town of Arendal in southern Norway’s Agder county and is reachable by scheduled passenger boats from Arendal and nearby ports during the warmer months.

• On-foot exploration: The island's wooden coastal houses and compact layout are best explored on foot; there are no roads for cars in the settlement area.
