Historically the island was used intermittently for customs and hunting activities but today is reserved for conservation and scientific observation. It lies within the Wadden Sea ecosystem, a tidal area of international ecological importance.
Memmert is located off the northwestern coast of Germany, west of the East Frisian island of Juist and reachable only by authorized boat from the mainland or neighbouring islands under regulated conditions.
