Memento Park

Memento Park is an open-air museum on the outskirts of Budapest that houses a collection of monuments and statues from Hungary’s Communist period. The park presents these works as historical objects rather than in their original propagandistic settings.

Large public sculptures and reliefs from the 1949-1989 period are arranged across landscaped grounds, and an indoor exhibition explains the political and cultural background of the period. The park offers both close inspection of the artworks and curated interpretation for visitors.

After the fall of the Communist government in 1989 many public monuments were removed from city locations; the park was created in the early 1990s to collect and display these pieces in one place. It has since become a focal point for reflection on the Communist era in Hungary.

Memento Park is located on the southern outskirts of Budapest in Pest County and is accessible by road from the city centre.
