Melkøya is a small island off the coast of Hammerfest in Finnmark, Norway, developed as the onshore site for the Snøhvit liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing plant. The island is an industrial facility rather than a public recreational site.
Melkøya was developed in the early 21st century to process gas from the Snøhvit offshore field; construction and installation transformed the island with heavy industry and reclaimed areas for plant facilities. The project was part of Norway’s Arctic petroleum development strategy.
Located immediately off Hammerfest on Norway’s northern Finnmark coast, the island is connected visually and logistically to the town and sits in the cold Barents Sea environment at about 70.7 degrees north latitude.

How to Get to Melkøya #
Melkøya is the island that hosts the LNG facilities just off Hammerfest. From Hammerfest town centre it is reached by road via the causeway/connection linking the island to the mainland - a short drive of a few kilometres from the town. Hammerfest is served by Hammerfest Airport (HFT) and by Hurtigruten coastal ships; from the airport or harbour take a taxi or local road vehicle to Melkøya (no regular public bus routes directly onto the industrial island).
Tips for Visiting Melkøya #
- Melkøya is an industrial LNG island near Hammerfest and public access is restricted - the safest and most reliable vantage points are along Hammerfest's waterfront and coastal viewpoints; do not attempt to land on the island.
- If you want a closer perspective, contact Hammerfest's visitor centre in advance - any guided visits are rare and must be booked ahead; otherwise plan to photograph and observe from designated public viewing spots on the mainland.
Best Time to Visit Melkøya #
Best visited in summer (June-August) for milder weather and long daylight; winter offers aurora viewing but is cold and darker.
