Meije
Mountain High Alpine peak in the Écrins massif, French Alps
La Meije in the Écrins massif is a steep glaciated peak prized by alpinists for long rock-and-ice routes. Climbers and ski-tourers come for challenging ascents and high-Alpine terrain.
La Meije is a steep granite massif in the Écrins range of the French Alps, located in the Hautes-Alpes department. The massif’s highest point is the Grand Pic de la Meije, rising to about 3,984 metres.
The mountain is renowned for long, technical alpine routes on exposed ridges and faces and is a classic objective for experienced mountaineers. Glaciers and steep couloirs sit on its northern slopes while the southern aspects fall toward high alpine pastures and valleys.
First ascents and route development in the late 19th and early 20th centuries established La Meije’s reputation among alpine climbers, and it remains a focal point within Écrins National Park. The massif lies near the village of La Grave and is accessible from several alpine approach valleys.
