Medvedgrad
Castle Medieval hilltop fortress overlooking Zagreb
Ruined hilltop fortress on Medvednica north of Zagreb dating to the medieval period; tourists hike the slopes for fortifications, panoramic views over Zagreb and small on‑site exhibits.
Medvedgrad is a medieval fortified complex located on the southern slopes of Medvednica mountain overlooking Zagreb, Croatia. Built as a defensive stronghold in the medieval period, its ruins and partially reconstructed sections form a prominent historic site north of the city.
Visitors encounter walls, towers, and the remains of a keep and chapels; the site includes a small museum space and interpretation panels that outline its medieval role. The ruin offers vantage points with broad views across Zagreb and the Sava River plain.
The fortress was constructed in the 13th century in response to regional threats and later suffered damage and partial abandonment in subsequent centuries as military needs changed. Conservation and partial reconstruction work during the late 20th century improved access and stabilized sections of the site for visitors.
