Mediterranean Steps
Cliff Steep coastal trail on Gibraltar's eastern cliffs
The Mediterranean Steps is a steep footpath on the eastern face of the Rock of Gibraltar that descends through limestone cliffs to the Mediterranean side of the rock. The route is known for its dramatic views over the Strait of Gibraltar and across to North Africa on clear days.
The path combines carved steps, narrow tracks and rocky sections and is commonly used by hikers seeking a relatively challenging route with panoramic sea views. It provides multiple viewpoints across the Mediterranean and the Bay of Gibraltar.
Historically the eastern tracks on the Rock were used and maintained by the garrison and for military access; today the Steps are maintained for recreational walking and managed access within Gibraltar’s nature and heritage areas.
The Mediterranean Steps lie on the eastern slopes of the Rock of Gibraltar, inside the boundaries of the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, a short distance above the Mediterranean shore and within easy reach of Gibraltar town and its visitor facilities.
- Terrain and safety: Trail is steep, uneven and exposed in places; sturdy footwear and water are recommended when hiking.
- Wildlife note: Barbary macaques inhabit parts of the Rock of Gibraltar and may be encountered on nearby paths; do not feed or approach them.
How to Get to Mediterranean Steps #
Access the Mediterranean Steps from the upper areas of the Rock of Gibraltar - either from O’Hara’s Battery (reachable by road or on foot from the cable car upper station) or by following local footpath signs. The trail descends toward the Mediterranean side and Catalan Bay.
Tips for Visiting Mediterranean Steps #
- Start at the top near O'Hara's Battery or the Gibraltar Cable Car upper station for the most rewarding route.
- Bring plenty of water and good shoes - the path is steep and rocky in places, with exposed sections.
- Keep an eye on Barbary macaques (monkeys); they can be bold and will try to take food or gear.
