Mediana

Mediana is a late Roman archaeological estate and suburb of ancient Naissus, located near modern Niš in central Serbia, principally dated to the 4th century CE. It functioned as a villa-estate with imperial associations and contains substantial architectural remains and decorative mosaics.

Excavations have revealed a large residential complex with decorated mosaic floors, a bath complex with hypocaust heating and the remains of several early Christian churches and outbuildings. The mosaics and room plans document high-status domestic architecture of the late Roman period.

Historically the site was part of the urban and suburban landscape of Naissus and is associated with imperial visits and administrative use during the 4th century. Over subsequent centuries the complex fell out of use and was buried until modern excavations brought the remains to light.

Mediana lies east of the city of Niš in southern Serbia, a few kilometres from the city centre, on the plain that surrounds the Nišava River.

• Major finds and display: Major finds include mosaic pavements and household items; many artifacts are displayed in the National Museum in Niš.

• Imperial villa (villa regia): A well-preserved villa complex including residential wings, service rooms and a central reception area dating to the 4th century CE; archaeological remains include mosaic floors and hypocaust installations.
• Bath complex: Thermal bath complex with furnace-room structures and heated floors typical of Roman bathing architecture, part of the wider estate plan.
• Church remains: Remains of early Christian churches and small chapels uncovered within the site, showing the site's use in the late Roman period.
