McCallum, Newfoundland and Labrador

McCallum is a small coastal outport community on the south coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It is traditionally a fishing settlement and remains a remote village with a harbour and wharves.

The settlement has retained characteristics of Newfoundland outports, including timber-built houses clustered around a protected cove and a small passenger ferry connection to the nearest road-linked town. There are no major tourist facilities within the community itself.

McCallum developed as a coastal fishing settlement and has been served historically by water transport rather than by road; local livelihoods have centered on inshore fisheries. The community has experienced the demographic and economic changes common to many small Atlantic Canadian outports.

Geographically it sits on Newfoundland’s south coast in Hermitage Bay and is reached by ferry from nearby harbour towns. The settlement is several hundred kilometres from the provincial capital of St. John’s and is best approached by the ferry links from the nearest road-accessible towns.
