Mayerling Castle

Mayerling Castle is a former imperial hunting lodge and estate in the village of Mayerling in Lower Austria, today noted for the 1889 death of Crown Prince Rudolf. The site includes a chapel and has been adapted to religious and memorial use.

The lodge and estate served as an imperial hunting retreat and became internationally known after the death of Crown Prince Rudolf on 30 January 1889. In subsequent decades the property was converted to religious use and now includes a Carmelite presence and commemorative chapel.

Situated in the Vienna Woods region, Mayerling lies in the municipality of Alland near the spa town of Baden, roughly 25 kilometers southwest of Vienna. The site sits in wooded, hilly terrain typical of the eastern Alps’ foothills.
