Mayaguana

Mayaguana is a sparsely populated island and administrative district in the southeastern Bahamas, characterised by long sandy beaches, coastal lagoons and a quiet, rural atmosphere. It is known for low-density development and is a destination for travelers seeking solitude and natural shorelines rather than resort infrastructure.

Beaches, snorkeling and small-scale fishing are the main visitor activities; the island has a handful of settlements with basic services rather than large hotels or nightlife. Transportation to the island is by scheduled domestic flights and by intermittent boat services rather than frequent ferries.

The island has a history of Lucayan habitation followed by colonial-era settlement and small-scale agriculture and fishing. Modern Mayaguana functions as a small local community with limited commercial development.

Geographically Mayaguana sits in the southeastern Bahamas chain, between the Turks and Caicos to the east and the larger Bahamian islands to the northwest; it is part of the Mayaguana District and is reached by air from Nassau and other Bahamian hubs.
