The Mausoleum of Theodoric is an early 6th-century tomb in Ravenna, Italy, built for the Ostrogothic king Theodoric the Great around 520 AD. It is notable for its heavy cubic massing and a single monumental roof slab fashioned from Istrian stone.
The structure served as Theodoric’s mausoleum and is valued for its unique early medieval engineering and form, distinct from contemporary Roman imperial mausolea. The building’s unadorned exterior and stone roof make it architecturally singular.
Constructed under Theodoric’s rule, the monument has survived with much of its original stone fabric and is part of Ravenna’s group of early Christian and Byzantine-era monuments that reflect the city’s importance in late antiquity and the early Middle Ages.
