Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi

The Mausoleum of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi is a large Timurid-era funerary monument located in Turkistan, southern Kazakhstan, built in the late 14th and early 15th centuries. It commemorates the revered Sufi teacher Khoja Ahmed Yasawi and is a key example of Timurid architecture in Central Asia.

The complex is dominated by a monumental brick mausoleum with a decorated portal and large tiled dome, extensive interior vaulting and richly patterned exterior tilework. The interior and the surrounding courtyards present architectural and decorative features associated with Timurid construction methods and decorative practices.

Construction of the mausoleum was commissioned by the conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) in the late 14th century and completed in the early 15th century to enshrine the tomb of Khoja Ahmed Yasawi. Over time it became an important pilgrimage site and a focal point for regional religious life; conservation work has focused on preserving its historic fabric and decorative schemes.

Situated in the city of Turkistan in the Turkistan Region of southern Kazakhstan, the mausoleum occupies a prominent position within a historic religious precinct and is accessible from regional road networks.
