Mausoleum of Imam Ali

The Mausoleum of Imam Ali, commonly known as the Shrine of Hazrat Ali or the Blue Mosque, is a major religious and cultural complex in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan. Locally the site is revered as the tomb or burial place associated with Imam Ali, and it functions as an important pilgrimage destination.

The present complex features a large courtyard, richly tiled facades and a distinctive blue-tiled dome that make it an architectural focal point of the city. The shrine compound has been rebuilt and restored several times over the centuries, reflecting its continuous importance to local religious life.

The site has medieval origins and has been expanded and renovated during successive periods, including significant repairs and reconstructions in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has been central to regional religious practice and local identity across successive dynasties and political changes.

The mausoleum stands in the centre of Mazar-i-Sharif, the largest city of Balkh Province in northern Afghanistan, and is easily reached from the city’s main roads and public spaces.
