Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

The Mausoleum of Galla Placidia in Ravenna is an early 5th-century funerary monument noted for its remarkably well-preserved interior mosaics and small cruciform plan.

Interior decoration is dominated by deep-blue mosaics and a starry vault, with figurative mosaics depicting Christian iconography; the small, intimate interior allows close viewing of the tesserae and pictorial detail. The mausoleum is frequently visited in conjunction with nearby late-antique monuments in Ravenna’s historic core.

Built in the early 5th century and traditionally associated with the imperial family of the Western Roman Empire, the mausoleum’s mosaics date to the same period and have survived with exceptional preservation. The building has served as a funerary structure and now as a protected monument within Ravenna’s ensemble of early Christian sites.

The mausoleum is located near the Basilica of San Vitale in central Ravenna, Emilia-Romagna, and forms part of the city’s cluster of early Christian and Byzantine monuments.
