Maupiti
Island Small Society Islands atoll with dramatic lagoon
A small island in the Leeward Islands (Society Islands), Maupiti draws snorkelers and sailors to its shallow lagoon, coral gardens and quiet beaches; visitors also encounter traditional villages and artisanal crafts.
Maupiti is a small volcanic island with an encircling reef and several motus in the Leeward Islands of the Society archipelago, French Polynesia. It is valued for its compact lagoon, coral reef and quieter visitor experience compared with larger resort islands.
The island presents a mix of a small village on the inner island, a shallow blue-green lagoon and outer motus ideal for short boat trips and snorkeling. Beaches, short walking trails and local crafts are concentrated close to the village, and the reef is within a few kilometres of shore.
Maupiti has been inhabited by Polynesian communities for many centuries and retained traditional settlement patterns and subsistence fishing. European contact and later French Polynesian administration brought gradual changes, but the island remains less developed than larger tourist islands.
Situated in the Leeward Islands group of the Society Islands, Maupiti lies west of the better-known islands of the group and is reached by short domestic flights from Tahiti or by inter-island connections.
- Access: Served by a short-runway airport with inter-island flights; schedules are limited and weather-dependent, so book connections in advance.
- Character: Less developed and less crowded than nearby Bora Bora, offering quieter lagoon snorkeling and traditional village life within a compact island area.
What to See #
- Main island and village: The central volcanic island core with the main village and limited roads; this is where most residents live and where local services are concentrated.
- Lagoon and motus: A ring of low coral motus and the shallow lagoon that encircles the island; the lagoon provides anchorage, snorkeling and small-boat access and separates the motus from the inner island.
- Maupiti Airport: A small airstrip on a motu serving short domestic flights to and from Tahiti and nearby islands, the usual aerial entry point for visitors.
How to Get to Maupiti #
Maupiti is a small island in the Leeward Islands (Society Islands). It is served by short regional flights from Tahiti (Papeete) operated by the local carrier and by occasional boat transfers from nearby islands such as Raiatea/Bora Bora. On arrival the airstrip and harbour are very close to the main village, typically a few minutes’ walk or a short taxi ride.
Tips for Visiting Maupiti #
- Fly on the short inter-island service (Air Tahiti) or take a boat from Bora Bora and plan to overnight-Maupiti receives regular day-trip traffic from Bora Bora, and staying overnight lets you explore quieter motus and the lagoon pass.
- Use the small public airstrip and arrange transfers with your guesthouse or a local skipper in advance; on-island transport is informal and boats/taxis are timed around flight bays and ferry arrivals.
- For the best snorkeling and seascape photography, head to the outer motu early in the morning before day-trippers arrive-these spots are calmest and least crowded at dawn.
