Main image

Masyaf Castle is a medieval fortress located in the town of Masyaf in Hama Governorate, western Syria. It is notable as the 12th-century stronghold of the Nizari Ismailis and their leaders.

The castle complex consists of layered defensive walls, towers and an inner citadel built on a rocky hill, with visible masonry repairs from different periods. Visitors see substantial surviving ramparts and corridors and can view the town and surrounding agricultural plain from the higher terraces.

The site was fortified before the 12th century and became the principal residence and military base of the Nizari Ismailis during the medieval period, when it served as the headquarters of Rashid al-Din Sinan. It was the focus of sieges and negotiations in the 12th century and later passed into the control of successive regional powers.

The castle stands within the urban area of Masyaf, rising above the town in western Syria; the surrounding landscape is agricultural plains and low hills characteristic of the Orontes valley region.
