Maryhill Stonehenge
Park Full-scale replica of Stonehenge as war memorial
Near the Columbia River Gorge, Maryhill Stonehenge is a full-size concrete replica of England’s monument, erected as a World War I memorial; visitors come for the memorial, picnic grounds and wide views over the river.
Maryhill Stonehenge is a concrete replica of England’s Stonehenge near Maryhill, Washington, erected as a World War I memorial and dedicated in 1918.
The site comprises a ring of concrete monoliths that reproduce the general form of Stonehenge and serves as a memorial to local soldiers who died in World War I. Visitors use the adjacent parking and picnic area, and many pause for photographs and views across the Columbia River Gorge from the bluff-top setting.
Commissioned and financed by businessman Samuel Hill in the 1910s, the memorial was intended to honor soldiers from the region who fell in the Great War and to provide a public monument accessible by automobile. The concrete construction was chosen for durability and to evoke the ancient monument’s form rather than to be an archaeological copy.
The replica stands on a bluff above the Columbia River near the community of Maryhill in southern Washington State, overlooking the river gorge and accessible from the Washington state highway corridor along the Columbia.
- Purpose and date: Built by entrepreneur and promoter Samuel Hill as a World War I memorial, it was completed and dedicated in 1918 and is constructed in concrete rather than stone.
