Marx-Engels Forum
Monument Open-air Berlin plaza with bronze socialist realist sculptures
Behind Berlin’s Nikolaiviertel, the Marx-Engels-Forum displays bronze statues of Marx and Engels by Ludwig Engelhardt as a reminder of East German public art; visitors stop for history, photographs and guided walks through Mitte.
The Marx-Engels Forum is a small public square in the Mitte district of Berlin that features prominent bronze statues of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. It was created as a civic space and political memorial in the era of the German Democratic Republic.
A compact landscaped area dominated by large bronze sculptures of the two philosophers mounted on a plinth, with pathways and low walls used by passersby. The figures are the focal point for photography and for understanding how public art was used in East Berlin.
The Forum was established in the 20th century by city authorities in what was then East Berlin as a deliberate ideological memorial. The site and sculptures have remained a recognizable remnant of the GDR period and are now part of Berlin’s broader urban history.
Sited in central Berlin’s Mitte district, the Forum sits amid dense urban fabric of government buildings, museums, and offices in the historic city centre. It is within walking distance of other central landmarks in Berlin.
- Location note: located in Berlin's central Mitte district, close to other Cold War-era sites and the historic centre
- Sculptural focus: features a prominent pair of bronze figures representing the two thinkers, created as a political monument in the 20th century
How to Get to Marx-Engels Forum #
Marx-Engels-Forum is in central Berlin (Mitte) beside the River Spree near Rathausstraße/Klosterstraße and the Nikolaiviertel. The nearest rapid transit stops are Märkisches Museum (U-Bahn U2) and Hackescher Markt (S-/regional trains); both are an easy 5-10 minute walk to the forum.
You can also reach the site by bus or tram to central Mitte stops and then walk across the river; driving routes use main central streets (e.g., Alexanderstraße/Rathausstraße) with limited nearby parking.
Tips for Visiting Marx-Engels Forum #
- Visit early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid the large tour groups and school trips that gather here; the plaza is open-air so quieter times make for better photos and a more reflective visit.
- There is no formal entrance-approach on foot from the Rathausstra9e/Nikolaiviertel side to combine the Forum with a short walk to Museum Island and the nearby historic centre.
- Take time to study the two bronze figures and the surrounding layout rather than just snapping a quick photo; the setting is intended as an urban sculpture park and reads best at close range.
